Description:

The top of the barrel near the breech has an inlaid coin silver banner marked "S. Jackson Palmyra, N.Y. Warranted" in Old English style script. The breech also has two bright bands. The smoothbore part octagon barrel is fitted with a post front sight and has an empty rear sight dovetail. The lock has floral and border engraving surrounding a central scene of a dog and game bird scene. The hammer also has engraving patterns including a fish shaped head; the spur is checkered. Aside from the barrel, trigger, forend cap, and wedge escutcheons, the remaining components have various engraving patterns. The straight wrist walnut half stock has checkering at the wrist, shallow cheekpieces, fourteen engraved coin silver inlays including an eagle with an U.S. themed shield and a name plate on the left flat, and has a compartment on the bottom of the butt. The buttplate and trigger guard have pineapple style finials. A wooden ramrod is included. The included consignor research folder includes images and information from The New York State Firearms Trade of other similarly decorated Jackson firearms. One page contains the following quote from the Wayne Sentinel on August 15, 1829: "The subscriber gives notice to the public in general that he is about establishing a Gun-Smithing Business in the Village of Palmyra . . . His work will be warranted to be first rate, and done in the most durable manner." Another quote claims "It is believed, however, that an attempt to excel" Jackson's work "by any other hand, would prove unsuccessful". Other passages highlight the quality of Jackson's work and that he produced high end "prize muskets" targeted at non-commissioned officers in the "39th Regiment of Infantry".

Rating Definition:

Fair. The rifle has some repairs and small replacement parts. The coin silver inlays remain mostly bright with some light aging while the remaining components have a dark brown patina with pitting and oxidation. The re-oiled stock is fair to fine with some chips, overall minor scratches, partially smoothed checkering, and cracks near the side plate and front of the trigger guard. The plate on the bottom of the butt is partially loose and the compartment door is needs some work. The lock is functional but needs some attention, and a section is chipped off on the left side of the hammer.
