Description:

This target rifle has a heavy octagon barrel marked "G.T. ABBEY/CHICAGO, ILL./CAST STEEL" reading towards the breech. The barrel has blade and notch sights. It is equipped with double set triggers and an engraved "G. GOULCHER" marked lock. The spurred trigger guard has a grip extension. The maple half stock has a pewter forend, brass forearm escutcheons, a German silver patch box, unmarked initial shield on the upper wrist, light cheek piece with German silver inlay, and German silver buttplate. The rifle includes a wooden ramrod. Many rifles produced by various American gunmakers in the 19th century are fitted with Goulcher locks. The reports made to the Illinois Generally Assembly at its twelfth session convened on January 5, 1857 lists G.T. Abbey as a gunmaker, but he is not listed in a Chicago Directory from 1876.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel retains strong brown finish mixed with brown patina. The lock has a mottled gray patina. There are some patches of pitting and minor marks. The German silver components and brass fittings have an aged patina. The refinished stock is fine with textured varnish, minor marks and scratches, and four small holes from an absent fitting just ahead of the patch box. The action needs some work. The markings are clear.
