Description:

This mid-19th century half stock rifle was built by D. P. Brown of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, using a Leman percussion lock. It features an octagon barrel marked "D.P. BROWN MAKER LANCASTER PA" with blade and notch sights. The lock is marked "LEMAN/ LANCTR PA." below the bolster. Most of the components, including the breech end of the barrel, display American style scroll engraving patterns. Aside from the casehardened lock, brown barrel, and double set triggers, the fittings are German silver. The stock is oil stained walnut and has a checkering pattern on the straight wrist and a shadow line cheekpiece. The patch box door opens via a button the lower buttplate tang. The breech end of the barrel has one gold and one silver band.

Rating Definition:

Good. The lock and barrel display a mottled gray patina with some traces of the original brown finish, areas of mild pitting, and some light spotting. The German silver fittings display a mellow aged patina with some minor marks and stains. The stock is good with some minor scrapes, small cracks at the breech and forend cap on the left, crisp checkering, and some small dings and chips. It is mechanically fine and has clear markings and designs.
