Description:

Beatus Beringer of Paris and St. Etienne appears in records between 1835 and 1869. His Paris address was 26 Rue de la Monnaie. He exhibited at the Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace in 1851. Aside from the "BERINGER ARQER A PARIS" marked Damascus barrels, the shotgun has full coverage relief engraved leafy scroll designs. This engraving may have been executed by Louis Penel of St. Etienne (active circa 1857-1870) who is known to have engraved and signed other shotguns by Beringer which display similar designs. The underside of the barrel and the water table have several mid to late 19th century Belgian proofmarks and various numeric markings. "80" is repeated on several component. It has a single post front sight. and is mounted with a French walnut buttstock with checkering at the wrist and a sling which retracts from the bottom of the butt and attaches to the corresponding hook on the bottom of the barrel rib.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as period refurbished. The barrels retain 98% plus of the brown finish and display attractive Damascus patterns. The other component retains 90% plus of the dark case colors. There are some minor marks and small spots of slight pitting. The wood is also very fine and has sharp checkering and a few scrapes and dings, and minor marks from handling and storage. The action functions excellently, and the engraving patterns and markings are distinct.
