Description:

This Japanese matchlock is in the familiar style of those produced during the Edo/Tokugawa period. Japan utilized these weapons well after they were obsolete in other parts of the world because it successfully abstained from outside conflict and allowed only limited outside interaction and commerce for over two hundred years. This example has a 53 inch overall length. The long 41 1/8 inch barrel has a triangular front sight and rear sighting block with a slight groove. Aside from the barrel and hardwood stock, the remaining components are brass. There are several cherry blossom and floral designs. The barrel is inlaid with an Ii clan brass mon behind the rear sight, and a mythical creature is on the right side of the butt. The Ii remained daimyo throughout the Edo period.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel has a dark, nearly black patina with oxidation and minor pitting. The brass has a mild aged patina throughout. The smooth wood is very good with only minor scrapes and dings. The action remains functional and the engraved designs on the floral accents remain mostly clear.
