Description:

Measuring 39 inches overall, with a 27 1/4 inch blade showing a waved hamon, prominent grain and a silver paneled habaki with engraved streaked accents and a copper core. Iron tsuba, square with rounded corners, scalloped along the edges with a pierced-through double dragon design on each side, brass fillers with niello silver finish, and a single signed seppa on each side, brass with silver paneling and light edge serrations. The hilt has iron fittings, black cord wrap and gold accented dragon spear themed menuki. With a textured black lacquer finished saya. The tang is unsigned, with a square cut at the base and two mekugi-ana, suggesting a tachi-length weapon shortened in accordance with later styles and preferences. A note supplied by the consignor suggests production by a smith of the Bizen school, circa 1392-1400.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The very fine blade is in excellent polish and shows some surface level grain splitting, along with some tiny edge dings, mild spotting and a sharp hamon. The fittings are fine with a mixed brown patina on the iron components, staining of the wrap, and scuffing and loss of a small amount of rayskin.
