Description:

This "hand cannon" style matchlock handgun has a brass barrel with a raised relief engraved dragon and Tokugawa shogunate style hollyhock mon. The Tokugawa clan ruled Japan from 1603 to 1867. It has raised front and rear sights. The escutcheons are engraved brass flowers and a nickel silver flower is fitted on the stock near the breech. The butt of the hardwood stock is carved in the shape of an elephant which is interesting given that elephants are not native to Japan but are highly revered in many Asian cultures. It also includes a wooden ramrod.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The brass has an aged patina with some spots of minor residue and slight verdigris. The engraving remains mostly crisp. The stock is fine with some slight cracks on the bottom and otherwise smooth surfaces and crisp carving details. The action needs some minor work.
