Description:

Remington produced less than an estimated 1,000 of these revolving rifles between around 1866 and 1879, using a larger version of the New Model revolver frame fitted with rifle length barrels and fitted with stocks instead of grips. The majority of those produced were .36 caliber. This example is one of the scarcely seen .44 caliber rifles and is marked "44" on the left side of the frame near the junction with the buttstock. It is marked "PATENTED SEPT. 14 1858./E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y. U.S.A./NEW MODEL" on top of the barrel in front of the rear sight. The serial number is marked on the bottom of the barrel and the lower tang. The brass trigger guard has an integral pistol grip extension and a spur at the rear of the bow, it and the brass buttplate were silver plated. It has a blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight. The buttstock has multi-point checkering at the wrist.

Rating Definition:

Fair as refinished, repaired, and fitted with a replacement stock and buttplate. The rifle displays a blend of blue finish and brown patina with some patches of light-mild pitting and oxidation. The trigger guard retains traces of the period replated silver. It and the buttplate have an aged patina that is darker on the buttplate. The stock is very good with sharp checkering and only minor marks. The action is excellent. The elevator/sliding notch on the rear sight is absent, and the upper tang is repaired. The markings are partially obscured but most are legible. The .44 caliber percussion version of the Remington Revolving Rifle is rarely seen.
