Description:

This is an original example of a mid-production DWM Model 1923 Stoeger American Eagle marked pistol with the very desirable 6 inch barrel. This is not one of the of Navy Lugers, instead it has the standard sights with the longer scarce 6 inch barrel. These American Eagle Lugers were the very first Stoeger Lugers made expressly by DWM under contract for the Stoeger Arms Company in New York for import into the United States in the early 1920s. It is unknown as to how many of these long barreled Lugers were actually produced however they are very scarce and much harder to find than a Navy or Artillery model, especially in this original high end condition. The chamber is marked with the prominent American Eagle crest and the DWM logo on the front toggle. The right side of the barrel extension is marked with the short two line markings of: "A.F. STOEGER INC./NEW YORK." in front of the spring, with the right side frame rail correctly stamped "LUGER -- REGISTERED U.S. PATENT OFFICE". The front of the frame is also stamped with a very small "GERMANY" below the serial number. It is correctly marked "SAFE" and "GELADEN" in the safety area and on the extractor respectively. The example was made in the Commercial serial number range with the full serial number "58539"., stamped on the front of the frame and underside of the barrel. The barrel and left side of the breech bolt both have the correct "Crown/N" proof mark, with no other proofs. The take down lever, trigger and side plate, are correctly stamped with "39" with all other parts being unnumbered. It has the rust blued finish with straw colored small parts and it is fitted with a set of post war light walnut grips used in the 1920s. It is complete with one early nickel plated magazine with the wooden base, which is stamped with "GERMANY" on the underside of he base.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as period retailer finished/assembled with 99% of the blue finish. The smaller parts retain 98% plus of their straw colors with a hint of fading on the edge of the trigger and take down lever. The grips are also excellent. Mechanically excellent.
