Description:

This is an excellent WWII J. P. Sauer and Son M30 Nazi Luftwaffe Survival Drilling, complete with its original storage case. The M30 Drilling was only issued to Luftwaffe bomber crews in North Africa and the Mediterranean Theater from 1941-43. They were intended to provided a high quality survival shotgun/rifle in case of a forced landing. They are typically called a drilling which consists of two 12 gauge shotgun barrels over a 9.3X74R rifle barrel. These Luftwaffe drillings were all produced by the J. P Sauer & Sons company which had been producing extremely high quality shotguns, rifles and pistols since 1751. Consequently all of these drillings exhibit fantastic pre-war workmanship that included hand fitting of all the parts, a high polish rust blue barrel with a beautiful color casehardening finish on the receiver, trigger guard, forend latching mechanism and grip cap. This beautiful drilling has all matching serial numbers, on the receiver rail, the rear area of the lower tang and under side of the barrel set. The forend attaching iron is also matching and is numbered "8170". The sides and under side of the receiver, trigger guard, screw heads and forend attaching iron have all been beautifully factory engraved with a diminutive high quality scroll pattern engraving. The bottom of the rear barrel lug has a single "eagle/2" Luftwaffe acceptance proof and the underside of each barrel and chamber area each have a Commercial "eagle/N" proofmark. Additionally each barrel is stamped with the appropriate bore and gauge/caliber markings of: "12/65" and "241". The shotgun and rifle barrels are marked "KRUPP-LAUFSTAHL", and the barrel set is numbered "338170". The right rear breech area of the shotgun barrel, and the right side of the buttstock are both stamped with a large prominent Luftwaffe "Eagle/Swastika" insignia. The barrels have a matte rib with the front sight being a raised brass bead type rifle sight with the standard raised rear sight, with the top of the receiver tang having a sliding barrel selector catch, so that when the rifle barrel is selected the rear rifle sight is raised and engages the forward trigger for firing the rifle barrel. This drilling is fitted with the Greener type cross-bolt receiver/action that has a side mounted safety lever. The underside of the receiver, and right underside of chambers have the intertwined "SS" logo "Sauer & Son" factory and both sides of the receiver are marked "J.P. SAUER & SOHN SUHL". The stock and forend are both made from select grade European walnut and both have a beautifully executed hand checkering on the pistol grip and sides of the forend. The left side of the stock has a small European oval cheekpiece and the right side has a large "Luftwaffe Eagle/Swastika" cartouche, color casehardened grip cap and it has the original black plastic buttplate, emblazoned with the intertwined "SS" logo for the J. P. Sauer & Sohns factory. The forend as noted is also a select grade of European walnut, beautifully hand checkered on both sides, that also features a hand rubbed oiled finish. This excellent example is complete with its original aluminum storage/carrying case which has a gray/green painted exterior. The inside lid of the carrying case contains a black stenciled listing of the original contents of the case. Included in the metal case is an original, "Akah" stamped leather sling form the Albrecht Kind company, are two padded storage covers; one for the barrels and the other for the receiver/stock assembly and a WWII K98 cleaning kit. The kit contains the metal pull-through bore cleaner along with an oiler and two soft bristle bore brushes.

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall with 99% of the blued finish on the barrels with a hint of wear at the muzzles. The action retains 97% plus of the original case colors overall with a little fading of the colors on the front, underside of the receiver (from light carrying) with slightly more fading of the colors on the pistol grip cap and top tang area. The forend and stock are both in excellent condition with very minor handling marks with a clear sharp Luftwaffe Eagle cartouche on the right side. The metal storage case retains 60% of its original gray/green painted exterior with the padded cases, leather sling and cleaning kit are all in excellent condition. A really super nice all original, high condition Luftwaffe M30 Drilling rig.
