Description:

Produced by an unknown Damascus smith, this is a fine Imperial German Navy officer's sword of the early 20th century. Measuring 34 1/4 inches overall, the 29 1/8 inch single edged quill-back blade shows a fine wavy Damascus pattern overall, with "DAMASTSTAHL" (Damascus steel) on the spine near the bottom and a 12 inched etched naval and scroll themed panel on each side. The right is decorated with a banner reading "Unsere Zukunft liegt auf dem Wasser" (Our Future lies on the Water), a quote from a speech given by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1901 calling for increased armament for the German Navy. Hilt is gilt brass, with a pair of folding counter guards, the obverse bearing an Imperial fouled anchor and the reverse signed "Mudlack", raised laurels on the knuckle guard, green and red eyed lions-head pommel, wire wrapping over the smooth grip, and a silver portapee with red and black accents. With a black leather scabbard with hammered gilt brass furniture, a single blue velvet and black ribbon hanger and a leather reinforced red sword belt. No information regarding "Mudlack" has been uncovered.

Rating Definition:

Very good overall. The blade has been lightly cleaned, with thin cracks visible at the bottom of the etched panels and 6 1/4 inches back from the tip, sharp etching, and well defined Damascus pattern. The hilt shows wear along the high points, mild verdigris on top of the guard, and light spotting on the well aged grip. A few light scuffs and spots are present on the scabbard.
