Description:

According to information bundled with the lot by a previous owner, both the flag pole topper and the naval clock were taken by an American sailor off the German Cruiser Prinz Eugen while in American custody after World War II. An Admiral Hipper class heavy cruiser, the Prinz Eugen was launched in 1938 and commissioned in 1940, spending most of the War in the Baltic Sea, while also participating in Operation Rheunuburg, an Atlantic Ocean breakout that resulted in the destruction of the HMS Hood, and Operation Cerberus, the "Channel Dash" that brought the Kriegsmarine's battleships through the English Channel to their home ports in Germany. Awarded to America as a war trophy after Germany's surrender, the vessel operated for a while as the U.S.S. Prinz Eugen with a mixed German and American crew, and was studied extensively for it's advanced sensor and fire control hardware. Unable to keep Prinz Eugen's engines in working order, the Navy ordered it used as a target ship for Operation Crossroads, a nuclear weapons test in July of 1946. At a range of 1200 yards from two thermonuclear detonations, the ship took only minor damage, but the Navy was unwilling to send repair crews into the irradiated vessel; Prinz Eugen was towed away to the Kwajalein Atoll, decommissioned, and finally sank on 22 December 1946. A photocopy of the sailor's scrapbook, including articles and photos of the cruise to Crossroads, when the items were reportedly taken. 1) Brass-colored aluminum flagpole topper, 10 1/2 inches tall and 4 3/8 inches wide, with a double-sided Nazi eagle motif. With a hardwood desk stand. 2) Kriegsmarine wall clock, serial number "4728N" on the face, "2067 and "67" on other components, brass construction with a silver plated face, hinged glass face cover, blued steel hands and black enamel markings. With key, numbered "2067" and "4.75".

Rating Definition:

1) Very good, with some light wear and lost finish. 2) Very good. A few dings are present on the main body, with 90% plus original silver on the face. Mechanism runs when wound, but not tested for precision or reliability. An excellent pair of artifacts from one of Nazi Germany's last big-gun ships of the line, as well as a milestone in America's development as a nuclear power.
