Description:

The engraved lock plate is marked "M. M. Maslin/WARRANTED". Michael M. Maslin was a lockmaker active in Baltimore from 1822 to 1833 and then in Philadelphia until 1847. The barrel is marked "P Good". Less is known concerning Good, but he appears to have been active around the same period in Pennsylvania. The rifle has other attributes of the early 19th century American long rifle including a full length stock with brass forend cap and other furniture, ornate patch box, and carving behind the cheekpiece. It has a wooden ramrod. The patch box has a horse head finial. The barrel and stock have been cut down, and the rifle now handles more like a German jaeger rifle. There is an empty rear sight dovetail.

Rating Definition:

Fair as period shortened to current length. The iron surfaces display a mottled brown patina. Mild pitting and oxidation is primarily limited to the lock components. The markings and engraving are crisp. The brass shows sings of having been cleaned and has mild to light aged patina. The wood is fine with some repairs including an old break from the comb down through the wrist, crisp carving, and minor marks. The lock functions very well.
