Description:

This is a scarce example of an early WWII G41(M) rifle as manufactured in 1942. This was an early German armaments attempt to develop and produce a semi-automatic rifle. Two firms competed to do this Walther and Mauser. The Mauser design used a complicated, conventional bolt action and a semi-automatic rifle action design along with a "Bang" gas trap system. In the semi-automatic operation the bolt served as a non-reciprocating charging handle, chambering the first round and cocking the striker, but in event of a gas system failure the operator could continue to fire the weapon like a conventional bolt action rifle. This was a complicated and time consuming rifle to produce and it lost out the Walther design, which used the more reliable G41 and G43 gas port system, rendering the bolt action mechanism unneeded. The Mauser design was only produced for a couple years before the German Armaments ministry completely switched over the Walther G41 and later G/K43 systems. The top of the receiver is stamped "G41(M)/1942" with the standard Mauser "Eagle/135" Waffenamt proof on various parts and components. The barrel is fitted with a standard blade front with a sheet metal sight cover with a tangent rear sight graduated from "1-12". It is fitted with a standard pistol grip walnut stock, a short mid-length walnut handguard and a cupped steel buttplate. The side and pistol grip area of the stock has the standard "Eagle/135" Waffenamt proof. There are matching serial numbers present on the visible parts overall. This example is complete with a WWII 1939 dated tobacco-tin cleaning kit with contents and a unmarked, smooth brown leather sling.

Rating Definition:

Fine as partially refinished. 70% plus of the original blue finish on the barrel assembly with the barrel bands, gas cylinder muzzle system, box magazine and trigger plate all being nicely refinished. The stock and handguard are both in very fine condition with nice original medium brown color overall mixed with minor handling marks and scratches overall with some light pressure dents on the sides. It has clear, visible proofs overall on the wood.
