Description:

The revolver was manufactured in 1859 and displays Germanic floral scroll engraving patterns in the style of Gustave Young including an eagle head motif next to the wedge on the left and a dog/wolf head motif on the hammer. Note the similar attributes on revolvers engraved by Young in "The Book of Colt Engraving" by R. L. Wilson; several employ similar scrollwork, hand engraved "COLT'S PATENT" markings, and the animal heads. The revolver has a brass cone front sight, the one-line Hartford address on top, standard naval battle scene on the cylinder and matching visible serial numbers. It is fitted with a smooth one-piece grip and comes in a hardwood case with fitted floral pattern lining on the fitted interior, "MANUFACTURED/SOLEY BY W. KIDDER" and "PATENT APR 1854" stamped on the top of the back edge, several lead balls and a couple conical bullets, a Colt powder flask with angled charger, Colt dual cavity bullet mold, Eley Bros. cap tin, and a combination screwdriver/nipple wrench. Cases by Kidder are very rare and most often found with embellished Colt revolvers such as this. Also included is a modern money bag labelled for nickels.

Rating Definition:

Very good as completely refurbished/refinished overall. 98% plus of the finishes remain over recut engraving and mild pitting. The replated silver has taken on an aged patina. There are a few minor handling marks. The grip is very good with an aged yellow patina from years of handling and some minor age cracks. The engraving patterns and markings are clear throughout with some evidence of semi-professional recutting of the markings. The cylinder is a re-rolled, renumbered replacement. The action functions very well. The case is fine with the latch component from the lid absent, mild overall storage wear, and some cracks. The accessories are very good.
