Civil War Smith Breech-Loading Carbine

Smith Carbine manufactured by Massachusetts Arms Co., of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts circa 1863. The carbine has a part-round/part-octagon barrel with military blue finish. The barrel has a front sight with nickel-silver blade and a folding leaf rear sight. The breech latch, trigger guard and lower tang are niter blue and the receiver, hammer and buttplate are color case-hardened. A sling bar and ring are mounted on the left side of the receiver. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Massachusetts Arms Co., legend, the Poultney & Trimble legend and Smith's patent markings. The serial number, "11957" is stamped on the barrel assembly and receiver. The Smith carbine was a popular and widely used Federal cavalry carbine. The Ordnance Department purchased over 30,000 Smith carbines during the Civil War.

ConditionFine as partially refinished (wood). The carbine retains nearly all of the original military blue finish on the barrel. Most of the fire blue finish is present on the breech latch, trigger guard and lower tang. The barrel band, receiver, hammer and buttplate have nearly all the muted case colors. The receiver markings and serial numbers are crisp. The stock and forearm have been expertly sanded and re-finished and show almost no handling or storage wear. No Ordnance inspection marks are visible on the left stock wrist. This is an attractive example of an important Federal Civil War cavalry carbine.
