The included factory letter confirms that this rifle was received in the warehouse and shipped on November 14, 1889, with a .32 caliber octagon barrel, plain trigger, and half magazine. The .32-20 was the first small game cartridge introduced by Winchester and was considered suitable for game up to deer at reasonable ranges. It was added to the Model 1873 line in 1882 and remained less popular in the Model 1873 line than .44-40 and .38-40 making .32-20 rifles relatively rare and all special order .32 caliber rifles quite rare.

Winchester 1873 Carbine 44 WCF
The accompanying factory letter confirms the carbine configuration, 44 caliber fancy stock, and engraved factory presentation inscription "W.R.A. Co. to James Gregg", and that carbine was shipped on October 12, 1887. The floral scroll engraving and presentation inscription is very similar in style to the factory engraved and inscribed Model 1873 rifle presented to Captain Jack Crawford pictured in R.L. Wilson's "The Book of Winchester Engraving" (page 190). As Wilson explains, "Coverage is about equal to the No. 10 engraving pattern, and includes a repeated, stamped design within the borders on each side of the frame." The scrollwork extends to the dust cover, cartridge elevator and buttplate tang. The left side plate has the Winchester factory presentation inscription: "Winchester Repeating Arms Co./to/Mr. James Gregg." The carbine has the Third Model integral dust cover guide rail and a dust cover with serrated grasping grooves on the tail. It is fitted with a bayonet stud style blade front sight behind the magazine retaining ring, a carbine 1873 marked ladder rear sight, and saddle ring and stud on the left side of the action. The top of the barrel has the two-line address/patent date marking ahead of the rear sight and "44 WCF" at the breech. The brass cartridge elevator is marked "44 CAL" and the upper tang has the model designation with the serial number on the lower tang. Mounted on a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with sling swivels and a crescent trapdoor buttplate. James Gregg was born in 1847 in England. He was the trade manager and general manger for the well known retailers and ironmongers Messrs. James McEwan & Co. Limited. The firm was founded in 1852 by James McEwan and John Houston to supply goods to stores in Victoria, Australia, during the gold rush in the 1850s and 1860s. Houston left the firm in 1855, and McEwan focused on wholesale and retail ironmongery until his death in 1868. In the 1880s, Gregg represented the company in Fiji and Australia. When the company expanded and opened a branch in Sydney, the manager was under Gregg's direction, and James Malcolm was the director for the company back at the London office. Gregg was also involved in civic affairs and was listed at the Grand Representative for the Grand Lodge Victoria based in Melbourne in 1887 and 1888. Winchester and McEwan & Co. were both involved in several large exhibitions in Australia in the late 19th century. Winchester won silver medal at the Sydney International Exhibition in 1879 and a gold medal in Melbourne in 1880. These medals are pictured on page 116 of "Winchester Repeating Arms Company" by Herb Houze. The "Official Record" from the 1880 exhibition indicates Winchester won a “First Order of Merit” gold medal for repeating rifles and carbines as did the Providence Tool Company. Smith & Wesson won gold for revolvers, and Colt and Parker Bros. won second order of merit for shotguns. In 1887, the Jubilee International Exhibition was held in Adelaide, South Australia, to celebrate Queen Victoria's golden jubilee. Few details about the actual exhibition are available. In August 1888, Winchester returned to Melbourne for another large event: the Melbourne Centennial International Exhibition in celebration of a century of British colonization of Australia. This event was even larger than the prior event in Melbourne and drew in over two million visitors. At this exhibition, both McEwan & Co, almost certainly headed by James Gregg, and Winchester both won high awards. McEwan & Co. won silver medals for tea and Portland cement. The "Official Record" of the event states: "We, the undersigned appointed to act as experts on appeals against the decisions of the jury on firearms, etc., have this day examined the exhibit of the Winchester Repeating Arms Co., United States, and beg to report that the Winchester Shot Gun of itself is in our opinion worthy of a First Award, as also the general display of arms and ammunition, which are highly finished. The whole exhibit we would recommend a First Award, with special mention for collective excellence." Marlin Firearms Co., Remington, and several European firms also won the First Order of Merit.

New Haven Arms Co. Henry Rifle 44 Henry RF
Henry lever action rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company in July 1864. The right barrel flat is stamped "S J BLACK" and the top of the buttplate heel is stamped with the initials "S.J.B.". Documents included with the rifle state that it was purchased at a gun show in Carson City, Nevada, in 1974. Subsequent research by the purchaser determined that Samuel J. Black came to the Nevada Territory in 1859 and, along with his brother, John L. Black, built the first brick building in Virginia City in 1862 and operated the "Black & Howell General Store. On May 5, 1888, S.J. Black murdered John L. Black in the living quarters of the Black & Howell store following a property dispute. The rifle has the distinctive Henry octagon barrel with integral 15-shot magazine and brass receiver and crescent buttplate. The rear sight has been removed from the barrel and replaced with a unique, hooded, rear sight with circular aperture that appears to have been made from an old rifle barrel. The rifle has the standard Henry nickel-silver front sight blade, later production, large diameter, magazine follower, second style receiver without the alternate rear sight dove-tail, second style buttplate with pointed heel and sling swivel and loop for sling hook on the left side of the stock and barrel. The barrel serial number is partially obscured by the rear sight but all the visible serial numbers match. The buttplate screws and tang screws are correctly not serial numbered on late production Henry rifles. The small "W" inspection mark used by Oliver Winchester is stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the lever latch. This rifle is one of the very few weapons that can be documented to territorial Nevada during the peak of silver mining in the Comstock Lode.

Historic Gold-Quartz Cane Inscribed to Charles E. DeLong, Envoy
Measuring 34 3/4 inches in height, the cane is fitted with a German silver banded iron tip, a 7/8 inch thick hardwood shaft, and a golden handle. The handle is engraved with scroll and geometric patterns with oval discs of polished gold ore stone on the front and rear and the inscription "Charles E. DeLong/Virginia/Nevada" on the left and "F.F. Low/Perpetuum gratis/J.De.L." on the right. Virginia City was one of the great boom towns of the American West, established after the discovery of the Comstock Lode and peaking at a population of 25,000 (down to 800 as of 2010). Charles Egbert DeLong was born in New York in 1832 and relocated to California with his family while still in his youth. In addition to participating in the Gold Rush, DeLong also studied law, was appointed a Deputy Sheriff, and was elected to the State Assembly. In 1869 he was established as a Resident Minister at the American Consulate in Japan, where he would be responsible for formally recognizing Japan's claim to the Ryukyu Islands (aka Okinawa Prefecture), traveled with Japan's Iwakura Mission, and helped discourage the formation of a Sino-Japanese alliance against the Western powers. Retiring from foreign service as a Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary, he returned to the States in 1874, establishing a law practice in Virginia City, where he lived until his passing in 1876. Frederick Ferdinand Low was the Governor of California from 1863 to 1867, and ambassador to China from 1869 to 1873; he likely interacted with DeLong during their respective periods of foreign service.

Winchester 1885-Rifle 28-30
Included with the rifle is a binder of documents. Among them is the sign that accompanied the rifle when it was on display at the Cody Firearms Museum. It states: "This rifle is the prototype for William Mason's design of a takedown system for John Browning's Single Shot Rifle." The 1988 letter from the Herbert G. Houze at the Winchester Arms Museum states: "two features indicate that it was produced by the Winchester company on an experimental basis." The first is that the relieved sides of the breechblock were an experimental concept designed to reduce weight and aid in the vertical movement of the breechblock. Second, a thumb screw on the right serves as an experimental takedown lever. Houze states it is "identical to that designed by Mason in 1886 and tried experimentally on both a Model 1886 Rifle and a Model 1887 Shotgun. Both these arms, as well as drawings of the system, are in the collection of the Winchester Arms Museum." As noted above, included documents also indicate this rifle was placed on display at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center Cody Firearms Museum from 1991until 2001. A letter from the museum's curator states they "Received. . .one (1) Winchester Model 1885 William Mason Experimental Takedown Rifle, serial number 34955 in near factory new condition." The presumed chronological provenance based on the consignor's information includes: William Randolph Hearst Collection, Dr. Howard Andrews Collection, Jim Serven 1949 Catalog, Unknown Buyer 1949, Hank Williams, Jr. 1970s, H.H. Bitz 1970s, Kidd Brothers 1988, and Frank Kelley 2001. The included factory letters confirm the rifle was originally received in the warehouse and shipped on August 24, 1889, in .22 Long Rifle with a "#2, 26 inch, 1/2 octagon barrel;" plain trigger; fancy oil finished, checkered pistol grip stock with shotgun butt and rubber buttplate; no platinum line in the Rocky Mountain front sight and a hammer stop at 1/2 cock. The rifle was "Returned and repaired on September 30, 1907." A letter from George Madis lists some information on William Mason including that he was employed at Winchester starting in 1882 and was a master mechanic from 1885 to 1910. The barrel has a gold washed combination blade and globe front sight, adjustable sporting rear sight, the two line address ahead of the rear sight, "25 W.C.F." at the breech and several small factory markings including "2"s on the bottom of the barrel. A fancy "P" is stamped on the front face of the action to the left. The upper tang is fitted with a mid-range Vernier peep sight with extra long rear screw that extends past the lower tang. The lower tang has the serial number and patent marking on the bottom and "3493 XXX S RB" on the left side. The upper tang inlet on the stock also has "3493." Winchester 1866 Rifle 44 RF
The Winchester Model 1866 has earned itself a noted place in American western history. Thousands were carried to the Great Plains and beyond by intrepid American pioneers and were relied upon for defense and hunting. The "Yellow Boy" (nickname usually referring to saddle ring carbines) was also popular among the Native Americans already living on the plains and several were used during the Battle of Little Bighorn. The '66 secured Winchester's place in the annals of the West and launched a long line of successful Winchester lever actions that remain popular to this day and still retain the basic form of the '66. This Model 1866 was manufactured in 1876 and has the serial number marked in block numerals behind the trigger. It is equipped with a German silver blade front sight and an elevation adjustable sporting rear sight. The barrel has the standard two line address and King's improvement marking. The right side of the frame has "M. DAVIS/1884" lightly hand scratched. It has the standard smooth stock and forearm with "gunmetal" furniture. The trapdoor compartment in the stock is empty.
