Barrel: 22 inch round

Stock: walnut

Description:

Approximately 8,000 of the improved Second Model or Model 1864 carbines were purchased by the U.S. Government on contract with the Joslyn Fire Arms Company and another 4,500 are estimated to have been sold on the open market. This example has no visible inspection markings or cartouches but the small anchor marking ahead of the trigger guard suggests use by the U.S. Navy. Aside from the anchor marking, the carbine has the standard markings and features. Exact use of the Joslyn carbines during the war is not known but they were primarily issued to cavalry and were poorly regarded.

Rating Definition:

Very good as partially refinished. The barrel is mostly an even blue with some spots of brown patina and the remaining components are a silver-gray patina with some patches of brown patina and slight pitting. The sanded, refinished stock is fair and has some minor chips and dents. The lock functions fine. Most of the markings are clear but the anchor is somewhat obscured.
