Description:

This carbine falls into the transitional serial number range (2400-3600) but has the standard Model 1862 brass fittings and friction latch. It also has the standard features and markings of the Model 1862, cartouches above the saddle ring plate, and small inspection marks. The U.S. Government purchased 2,200 of the Model 1862 carbines in 1862-1863, then requested the breech mechanism be made more secure since the friction latch could be bumped open in combat. The resulting Model 1864 was more widely used and around 8,000 were purchased by the government.

Rating Definition:

Very good with refinished wood. Faint original blue finish and case colors remain. The brass has an aged patina and the faded surfaces have gray and brown patina. There are some minor marks and scratches and light spotting. The sanded, reoiled wood is good and has small pressure marks and faint cartouches. The lock functions fine and the markings are mostly clear.
