Description:

Presentation grade, Civil War, officer's sword with deep relief, gilded, cast bronze hilt and gold washed, damascus blade. The 33 inch spear-point blade with single fuller and round back generally conforms to the pattern used on regulation Model 1850 Staff and Field Officer's swords. The blade is decorated with high grade etching and dry needle engraving highlighted by gold wash. The obverse of the blade is decorated with a central stand of arms and trophies with "E. PLURiBUS UNUM" in a ribbon surround by detailed floral sprays. The reverse has a central 'U.S." with dry etched highlighting surrounded by floral sprays. The blade lacks maker's markings or proof marks. The cast bronze, gilded, hilt has a single knuckle bow accented with heavy floral decorations. The grip is round with deeply cast ribbons with a stylized United States shield on the back. The fluted, flared, pommel was originally topped with an eagle motif. The eagle has been neatly removed and only two talons, one of which is grasping a globe, remain on the top of the pommel. The hilt has a large, oval, presentation panel which has not been inscribed. The sword is complete with a nickel-plated scabbard decorated with highly detailed, gilded, cast bronze scrollwork on the bands and drag. This is a very high quality, unique, presentation grade officer's sword with Model 1850 Staff and Field Officer's style blade. The "watered steel", gold washed, damascene blade on this sword represents the artistic height of the blade maker and etcher. Civil War swords with damascene blades are rare and highly sought after.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall. The blade retains half of the damascene and gold washed finish with sharp acid etched decorations and dry needle engraving. Wear is limited to some scattered and very minor discoloration and scattered spots of pitting on the point and leading edges of the blade. The leather blade washer has been removed. The cast bronze hilt and scrollwork on the scabbard show only traces of the original gilt finish. The hilt casting remains extremely crisp and, with the exception of the missing eagle on the pommel, shows minimal wear. The scabbard has nearly all of the nickel-plating intact but has several dents and one crack in the body between the lower mount and the drag. Both the scabbard body and bronze mounts and drag have been cleaned and none of the original gilt finish remains. This is a handsome, very high quality, presentation grade, Civil War officer's saber with a very desirable gold washed damascene blade.
