Stock: walnut

Description:

Casehardened with attached bayonet and scabbard. Barrel is marked "V/P/eagle". Metal piece on scabbard is torn. Remington only manufactured approximately 12,501 of these Model 1863 "Harpers Ferry Pattern" rifles under government contracts during the Civil War. They are a blend of Model 1841 "Mississippi" and Model 1855 rifles attributes. Both of those models were previously manufactured by Remington and Harpers Ferry. None are known to have been issued to units during the Civil War despite these rifles' high quality. This example has the standard markings and features and is dated "1863" on the lock and barrel. The stock has crisp "HDJ" (Henry D. Jennings) and "BH" ( Benjamin Hannis) cartouches. The saber bayonet has a leather scabbard with brass fitting.

Rating Definition:

Fine with refinished wood. 85% plus of the original blue finish and vivid case colors remain, and most of the brass is bright. The stock has some vise marks visible on left flat with scattered chips/slivers at the edges most noticeably around the lock plate screw escutcheon. The lock functions fine and most of the markings are crisp. The bayonet is good and has a mostly bright blade with some spots of mild pitting. The scabbard is fair and has a loose tip.
