Description:

The Springfield Model 1863 was the final muzzle loading firearm manufactured by the U.S. national armories. 273,265 of these type I muskets were manufactured in 1863 by the Springfield Armory. Many of the Model 1861 and 1863 muskets were altered to breech loaders after the Civil War. This example has blued small components and an eagle over "WHITNEY ARMS CO." on the left side of the stock. Otherwise, it has the standard markings and features.

Rating Definition:

Very good as refurbished. There are patches of period retailer applied blue finish on the barrel bands and some traces of case colors on the lock. The balance displays primarily brown patina, and there are some scattered marks. The stock is fine and has some hairline cracks in the butt and scattered small dings, chips, and scratches from use and storage. The markings are mostly crisp, and the lock functions fine.
