Description:

Casper D. Schubarth, originally from Norway, was brought to Washington in May of 1862 to account for the fact that he arranged for Rhode Island Senator James F. Simmons to receive a "commission" for helping him get an Ordnance Department contract. He testified that he had been told that this was customary at the time but was told that it was in fact illegal. The payment was considered void and he was allowed to complete the rifles, but he is only known to have delivered 9,500 of the 50,000. He did not have the manufacturing facilities to produce the guns, so they were assembled in Providence by Schubarth's employees from parts subcontracted to other manufacturers. For example, the barrels came from "Mr. Washburn, and the Trenton Company" in the rough and were finished by "Mr. Ashton" in Middletown. The Pecksmith Manufacturing Company produced the bayonets, butt plates, and trigger guards, and the triggers were manufactured by Bigelow in Hartford, Connecticut. It has the standard Model 1861 features and is marked with "1863" and "U.S./C.D. SCHUBARTH/PROVIDENCE" on the lock and the standard proofs and "1862" on the barrel. The left stock flat has "C.B. Hoard" in a rectangle, an "RPB" cartouche, and a "RKA" cartouche with "FEM" below it.

Rating Definition:

Good. The iron is a mixture of bright surfaces and brown patina. The bayonet displays primarily brown and gray patina. There is some light pitting. The stock is also good with crisp cartouches, minor dings and scratches and some slight cracks at the nose and tail of the lock plate. The action functions perfectly, and the markings are crisp.
