Description:

A total of around 16,500 Model 1862 and 1864 carbines were manufactured by the Joslyn Fire Arms Co. in Stonington, Connecticut, during the Civil War. Given that the earliest Model 1862 carbines used percussion ignition, this example is one of the first to use rimfire cartridges. Note that it uses a smaller striker/firing pin than the standard Model 1862s. It has a blade front sight, notch rear sight with two folding leaves, standard manufacturer markings, and no visible government inspection marks. The few Joslyns that were not sold directly to the government were purchased through arms dealers and nearly all were still used during the war.

Rating Definition:

Fair as refinished. The carbine has mostly natural and applied brown patina and aside from the breechblock, which is partially blue, and the brass fittings, which have an aged patina. The heavily worn stock is also fair and has some small chips and dings. The lock functions fine and the markings are mostly clear.
