Description:

This revolver is listed on page 105 of the included copy of "Colt Peacemaker Collector Handbook and Guide" by Keith Cochran. The author notes that in the early 20th century Wells Fargo & Co. began ordering firearms directly from manufacturers instead of arming their agents through local retailers. He notes that William Ashton was in charge of the orders and lists this revolver by serial number. The factory letter confirms this revolver was shipped in .45 Colt with blue finish, and "W. F. & Co." engraved on the butt. It was part of a twelve gun order shipped to Wells Fargo & Company in New York City on October 16, 1906, in the care of W. M. Ashton. A sales receipt from when the revolver was purchased in late 1997 and a Tombstone Tumbleweed article from 1998 about a Wells Fargo agent and his Colt are also included. Aside from the Wells Fargo engraving on the butt, the revolver has the standard early 20th century markings and features including matching serial numbers on the frame, trigger guard, and back strap. The grips are numbered to a slightly later gun and were likely replaced in the period of use.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The revolver has traces of original finish and otherwise a mottled brown patina with mild pitting. The grips are very good with mostly crisp checkering, some handling wear, and minor marks. The action is excellent and most of the markings are clear. This is a rare opportunity to get your hands on a documented Wells Fargo & Co. Colt SAA!
