Description:

This revolver is inscribed "J. C. Schenck" on the bottom of the trigger guard bow. The consignor has included a folder containing copies of Confederate infantryman John C. Schenck who served initially as a private in Company B of the 7th Alabama Infantry and Company D of the 51st Regiment of Alabama Cavalry (Partisan Rangers). Other men with the same first initials and last name also fought for the Union during the war such as Julius C. Schenck (6th, 22nd and 185th Ohio Infantry) and John C. Schenck (4th New Jersey Infantry). The revolver's early serial number suggests it was manufactured in 1860 well before the war began. At that time, Remington revolvers were still sold on the open market in the North and South making an inscription to a man from either side very possible. The revolver has a cone front sight, top strap groove rear sight, the two line barrel marking, matching serial numbers and smooth grips. The barrel catch is the earliest style similar to that used on Colt's revolvers from the period that is usually found on the "Single Wing" first type Beals revolvers not these second variations. According to Donald L. Ware on page 337 of "Remington Army and Navy Revolvers, 1861-1888," he had recorded only 8 examples of these transitional revolvers during his study. Consignor states this item was previously on display at the Cody Firearms Museum from the Slim Kohler collection.

Rating Definition:

Poor. The revolver has gray and brown patina and extensive moderate pitting. The refinished undersize grips are fair and have mild handling and edge wear. The markings are somewhat faded but the action functions very well.
