Colt Lighting Slide Action Rifle manufactured in 1901. The rifle has 26-inch, full octagon, barrel with 15-shot magazine. The barrel has a Rocky Mountain style front sight with nickel-silver blade and buckhorn sporting style rear sight. The barrel, magazine and receiver have the Colt high polish, commercial blue, finish. The hammer and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The loading gate, bolt, trigger and frame screws are fire blue. The un-checkered forearm and straight wrist stock are oil-finished, straight grain, American walnut. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the Colt Hartford address and 1883, 1885, 1886 and 1887 patent dates in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "38 Cal." is boldly stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The left side of the receiver is roll-stamped with the Rampant Colt trademark. The serial number, "88573" is stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger.

Very fine. The rifle retains 85% plus of the original high polish blue finish overall. Wear is limited to several faint age spots on the bottom of the magazine. The receiver has some very minor high point wear and a few insignificant handling marks. There is light edge wear on the sides and bottom of the trigger guard. The fire blue finish on the loading gate is mostly a silver-gray patina. The hammer and crescent buttplate retain 50% faded of the case colors with edge wear on the hammer and fading and age discoloration on the buttplate. "FG76292" is faintly scratched on the buttplate and lower tang behind the trigger guard. The walnut stock and forearm retain most of the original oil finish and remain in excellent condition with minimal handling wear. This is an exceptional example of a Colt Lightning Medium Frame Slide Action Rifle.
