Description:

This is a nice example of a factory engraved Merwin Hulbert & Co. revolver. The barrel, cylinder and frame are adorned with the distinctive Merwin Hulbert simple floral vine and punch dot design with red and gold highlights. In addition the left side of the frame has a round panel with a buck lying in the grass. The standard Merwin & Hulbert address followed by numerous patent dates marked on top of the barrel and the one-line Hopkins & Allen address on the left. The serial number is marked on the butt, and the matching assembly number, "4078" is marked on the rear cylinder face, rear of the barrel lug and on the cylinder pin. Integral front blade sight, open top frame with a frame notch rear sight and scoop type cylinder flutes. Nickel finish, with gold washed cylinder, niter blue trigger, and casehardened hammer and trigger guard. Fitted with a pair of pearl grips with a relief carved Mexican eagle on the left side, relief carved "RM" monogram on the right side, as well as a miniature Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff badge on the top of the right panel.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retains 95% original nickel finish with some very minor flaking on the edges of the hammer slot. The gold wash remains 50% intact and is mostly visible in the cylinder flutes and around the rear edge. The hammer retains half of the original faded case colors, while the trigger guard has a smooth mottled gray patina. Most of the original bright nitre blue remains on the trigger. The grips are also very fine with some soiling in the finely detailed carving, a few small minor nicks and light handling marks. The engraving and markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
