This revolver has the "JS/anchor" marking on the front of the grip below the lower tang known to be marked on revolvers exported for the Confederacy. The London Armory Company contracted with Confederates Major Caleb Huse and Captain James D. Bulloch. The contract ensured that all the rifles and Kerr revolvers the company produced would be available to the C.S.A. and not the Union. While around thousands of revolvers and rifles were purchased, it is not known how many actually succeeded in getting through the Union blockade and into the hands of Confederate soldiers. Those that did were well regarded by the men carried them as demonstrated by the Kerr presented to Given Campbell by Jefferson Davis near the end of the war as Davis made his last ditch effort to escape capture. The Kerr revolver's cylinder can be rotated by pulling the trigger, but the hammer must be cocked manually and also revolves the cylinder when it is. The use of an older style back action percussion lock meant that these revolvers were easier to work on and repair than more complicated revolver actions. This example has a brass post front sight, "LAC" and two English proofs on the upper left barrel flat, "LONDON/ARMORY" on the left side under the cylinder, "KERR'S PATENT 4549" on the right side of the frame, matching serial and assembly numbers, alternating proofs on the cylinder, "LONDON ARMORY CO" on the lock plate, a checkered grip, and a lanyard ring.

Very fine with 75% of the original blue finish with the hammer retaining 40% of the original case colors. A brown patina is on most of the faded areas, and there is some light spotting. The wood is fine with some chipping around the bottom of the lock inlet and several dings in the checkering. Mechanically needs work as the trigger does not engage the double action and the cylinder spins freely. Some of the markings are faint, but the grip stamp is clear. One will look a long time to find a finer example of a Confederate Kerr Revolver!
