JUNR" suggest it and the gun were manufactured by a son of John Rea who was active from the 1770s until 1830 (1778-1804 as John Rea & Sons) in London and manufactured holster pistols for the East India Company. It has a single set trigger (commonly found on early 19th century dueling pistols), and an engraved trigger guard with pineapple finial.

Rating Definition:

Good. The pistol displays a dark brown patina overall and has traces of the original swirled brown finish on the Damascus barrel. There is some pitting concentrated around the vent and on the trigger guard bow. The stock is also good with some light scratches and sings and a few slight hairline cracks. The lock is functional, but the set trigger needs some work.

B) Large Bore H. W. Mortimer Pistol

Manufacturer: British
Model: Flintlock Pistol
Type: Pistol
Gauge: 80
Barrel: 8 7/8 inch round
Finish: brown/casehardened/blue
Grip:

Item Views: 1459

Catalog Page: 179

Description:

This pistol was manufactured in the late 18th century or beginning of the 19th century by Harvey Walklate Mortimer and is marked "W H MORTIMER" on the lock, "H.W. MORTIMER LONDON" on the flat section of the barrel at the breech, and with three London proofmarks on the left at the breech. There are also floral and scroll engraving patterns on most of the components including the screw heads, and the trigger guard has an acorn finial. It has a blade front sight. The lock has a sliding safety. The Mortimer family was well known for their high quality firearms in the 18th and 19th centuries. Their dueling pistols were particularly desirable and were often imitated in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Rating Definition:

Good as period refinished. The barrel is a swirled brown with some light pitting showing through primarily at the vent. The lock has mostly silvered out case colors and some light oxidation. The safety switch is damaged, but the lock is mechanically excellent. The trigger guard retains 75% of the blue finish, and traces of blue finish remain on the ramrod pipes which have a brown patina on the balance. The refinished stock is also good with some chipping along the edges, various scrapes and dings, and some repaired cracks at the breech and right side of the forend. The engraving patterns and markings are crisp throughout.
