Description:

Measuring 28 3/4 inches in overall length, this is a superb example of the kind of side sword that would have been mandatory equipment for a European nobleman on the hunt. The 23 1/2 inch straight double edged blade is cross-sectioned hexagonal with hollow ground edges for most of the length, transitioning to an oval cross section near the ricasso, with a gold washed wavy line cut through the flat, light scroll decorations, and a pierced through 3 1/2 inch panel displaying a crown topped with a globus cruciger, the motto "VIVE LA CHASSE" in a ribbon, and a scene of a dog running down a stag. The hilt is iron and stag horn construction, with a ring counter guard and a lightly flared pommel. Unusually for a hunting weapon, the true edge of the blade shows a number of dings, including the deep and narrow dings traditionally associated with blade-on-blade impact. Attributed to 18th Century France.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The blade is showing a mixed gray and brown patina, scattered pitting, and traces of gold wash around the ricasso. The guard and pommel are similar in color, with heavier pitting and light wear on the stag segments.
