Description:

This beautiful revolver was designed by James Webley. He received the patent for his design on March 29, 1853. The grip angle and long hammer spur allowed for much faster cocking of the action than a standard single action percussion revolver. He and his brother Philip were the founders of the famous Webley firm that manufactured many of the revolvers used throughout the British Empire in the latter part of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The "long spur" revolvers were the first revolvers designed and produced by the firm. Only an estimated 2,000 were manufactured by the end of the decade due to slow production and high costs. This example has gorgeous English scrollwork engraving and border designs, a low blade front sight, hammer notch rear sight, "WILKINSON & SONS . 27 PALL MALL, LONDON." on the top of the barrel, two proofmarks on the bottom of the barrel at the breech, alternating numbers (1-5) and London proofmarks on the cylinder, "JAMES WEBLEY/PATENTEE" on the left side of the frame in a banner, a loading lever on the left side of the frame, checkered grips, the serial number and "BY HER MAJESTY'S/ROYAL LETTERS PATENT" on the back strap, and a lanyard stud on the butt. It comes in a later hardwood case fitted to the gun and the accessories and lined in green baize. Included is a key with a "Liqueur Case" tag, a container with several conical bullets, a wooden bore rod, brass bullet mold, James Dixon & Sons powder flask, small oiler bottle, nipple wrench, and six Eley paper cartridges.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. 80% plus of the original, bright high polish blue finish and 85% rich vivid case colors remain on the cylinder, hammer and loading lever. Most of the finish wear is located on the right side of the action above the trigger and on the grip frame. The grips are also excellent and have sharp checkering, some small spots of slight surface chipping, and minor handling marks. The case and accessories are very fine with mild storage wear.
