Description:

One of the final weapons designed and developed by the Nazis in World War II was the VG1 rifle know as the "People's Rifle". These were all last-ditch small arms produced by the end of the war. In essence, the VG1 was the final version and successor to the standard 98k rifle, stripped to the bone with as many simplified or repurposed parts as possible, which were intended to produce a suitable, low cost working bolt action rifle. The top left side of the receiver is stamped "VG No 05/Walther". This is an early version that has the slightly heavier, straight turned barrel with the small step approximately 3 1/2 inches from the muzzle with a counter bore down the barrel for approximately 4 inches. These barrels were usually manufactured from rejected and then reclaimed machine gun barrels, hence the rough outside turning. The front sight has been dovetailed into the top of the barrel and it is fitted with a sheet metal front sight cover. The rear sight is a simple round sheet metal stamping attached to the front of the receiver, with a notch cut into it. The receiver is fitted with rough turned/machined bolt made from bar stock with a straight steel handle just stubbed in place on the side. The firing pin and striker assembly are all simple sheet metal stampings. It has a sheet metal stamping trigger guard and internal components, albeit for the springs. It is fitted with a very simple, flat sided, one piece beech wood stock that has a thin sheet metal buttplate. The inside of the has been machined inside to ensure the action fits correctly with no hand fitting. It is equipped with a single K43 box magazine and comes with a green canvas sling.

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall with 90% plus of the original blued finish remaining, showing thinning and light finish loss overall due to the late war finishing techniques as well as handling and cycling over the years. The complete bolt assembly is still in the white from the factory. The exceptionally fine stock shows a light honey color overall showing minor handling marks and scratches on the sides. Mechanically excellent. An interesting late war Walther "last ditch" bolt action rifle.
