Description:

This is an example of an extremely rare early Mauser Model 1912/14 experimental/prototype, semi-automatic pistol chambered in the powerful "45 ACP" cartridge. This design was originally started in 1909, with a few very early test samples proving unsuccessful. However Mauser continued to improve the design through 1911 and with it finally proving out in 1912. the Mauser factory applied for a patent which was approved as the Model 12/14 in ( 9mm Parabellum. It is estimated that approximately 150-200 of the 9 mm Parabellum designs were produced with the highest recorded serial number (in 9mm) is 166. Eventually the Mauser factory redesigned the Model 12/14 to fire the larger and more powerful "45 ACP" cartridge that was being tested by the U.S. Military, and it is estimated that not more than an handful of this model (in 45 ACP) were ever produced due to the start of WWI, when all production of this model was stopped. Mauser continued to produce the smaller 1910 and 1914 version in 6.25 mm and 7.65 mm, throughout WWI and into the early 1930s. The left side of the slide is marked "WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER A.-G.OBERNDORF A.N. MAUSER'S PATENT". The serial number "2" is stamped on top of the rear of the frame and slide; the side of the barrel lug; the underside of the safety lever and side plate with no other visible numbers present. It is fitted with a one-piece checkered wraparound walnut grip. It is complete with one original polished steel magazine with a rust blued base. This exceptional pistol has the high polish rust blue metal finish with the trigger, operating rod guide, and extractor heat blued with some of the internal parts having a straw colored finish.

Rating Definition:

Very fine retaining 95% of the original rust blued finish overall with slight thinning to brown on the center of the front grip strap. The various smaller nitre blue parts were restored. The replacement walnut grip is fine with re-cut border on the checkering. Otherwise excellent with sharp and crisp markings and edges. The floorplate has been replaced and the left side of the frame and sideplate refinished. A rare experimental Mauser Model 12/14 in the very desirable 45 ACP cartridges in exceptional condition. A rare opportunity to acquire one of the most desirable and rare early Mauser Model 12/14 pistols.
