Model: Martini
Type: Rifle
Gauge: 22LR.
Barrel: 25 inch round
Finish: blue
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 5473
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 315
Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun
Description:

This is a rare early original No. 6A special order BSA single shot sporting rifle with the short forend. The 22LR sporting rifle production started in 1909 at serial number 9400, this serial number "10151" indicates manufacture circa 1910. This rifle was special ordered with the rare No. 8, folding, tang mounted target rear sight adjustable for windage and an early No.19 combination, folding target globe/post front sight. The rear sight is fitted with a early "six-hole" rotating aperture eyepiece that is marked "BSA/PPAT 21332-09". The barrel is marked: "MADE BY/THE BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS COMPANY Ltd./ENGLAND/CARTRIDGE .220 LONG RIFLE" and both the barrel and receiver have the early Birmingham factory "Crown/B" firing proofs. The receiver and the walnut stock are both stamped with the early "BSA/three stacked rifles" logo on the side. Fitted with its original straight grip English walnut stock (with nice figure on both sides) and the short forearm. It comes with an original early "Parker Hale" wide green web sling with the double hook ends. This sling was only used for about 6 months as BSA changed to the standard sling swivels held on by screws.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 90% of the original high blued finish overall with some light thinning on top of the barrel where handled. The receiver retains 97% of the high polish blue finish and the buttplate retains 80% of its nitre blue mixed with brown patina. The front sight ring/globe has been bent slightly. The forend and stock are in fine plus condition showing handling marks and light scratches in some areas, both have their original finish, never sanded or refinished. The BSA stock proofs are clear and distinct. The underside of the barrel has a very old, tiny import mark. It has matching numbers on the barrel, receiver, breech block, and trigger assembly. This is very rare, seldom seen, very early BSA sporting rifle.

B) Rare Early Special Order No 8A BSA Sporting Rifle with No. 8 Folding Target Rear Sight

Manufacturer: BSA
Model: Martini
Type: Rifle
Gauge: 22LR.
Barrel: 25 inch round
Finish: blue
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 5473
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 315
Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun
Description:

This is another example of a very rare early original BSA No. 8A, special order sporting rifle. This rifle was manufactured circa late 1918/19. This was the next model of BSA, 22LR sporting rifle. This special order rifle has an early No. 8, tang mounted, adjustable folding target rear sight with an early No.19 combination, folding target/post front sight. The rear sight has the rare, early "six-hole" rotating eyepiece, that is marked: "BSA/PPAT 21332-09". The barrel is stamped: "SUPERIOR NICKEL STEEL" and "MADE BY/THE BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS COMPANY Ltd./ENGLAND/CARTRIDGE .220 LONG RIFLE", with the early Birmingham factory "Crown/B" proofs. The receiver has the early "BSA/three stacked rifles" logo on the left side. It has a straight grip walnut stock with a wider and heavier forearm; with hand checkering on the forearm. This rare, early rifle is also complete with its original Parker Hale web sling with the larger sling swivels and screw heads. This is the correct early second pattern Parker Hale with sling swivel screws used on early BSA sporting rifles.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 95% plus of the original high blue finish overall. The barrel is starting to turn a dull blue finish with muzzle and high spot wear. The receiver retains 98% original high blued finish with some slight browning. The stock and forend are in very fine condition with 95% of the original varnish overall with light scratches/handling marks on the right side. The forend has nice original checkering overall showing minor nicks and light pressure dents in the checkering with a heavier mark by the lower sling swivel stud. The rear underside of the barrel has an old, very tiny, import mark. Matching numbers on the receiver, barrel, breech bolt and trigger guard assembly. This is an exceptional lot with two original, early, BSA sporting rifles that are rarely seen on the market today as most saw heavy use and were refurbished.
