Description:

Highly prized by collectors for its limited production and significance as the first Colt revolver manufactured specifically for a metallic cartridge, the Model 1871-72 Open Top Revolver is the direct predecessor of the famous Colt Single Action Army; military feedback on the 1871-72 directly inspired the solid frame construction of the SAA. Approximately 7000 Model 1871-72 revolvers were manufactured. Fixed blade and notch sights on the barrel, with the New York address on top and the spring loaded ejector rod on the right. On the left side of the frame is the 1871/1872 "Two July" patent dates, with a bored-through cylinder showing the Texas Navy battle scene, matching external numbers, and a set of smooth one-piece grips.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus with a crisp gray and brown patina overall. Showing a number of dings around the wedge, mild pitting at the muzzle and breech, and scattered spotting and handling marks. The barrel address shows some fading, as does the second "PAT." in the patent date. The cylinder retains most of the original Texas Navy scene. The grips are very good replacements with some sanding and dents. Mechanically excellent. This example is way above most of the other 1872 Open Top Revolvers that writer encounters!
