Description:

This model represents Colt's only attempt to compete with Winchester for the lever action rifle market. A total 3,775 rifles were manufactured between 1883 and 1885, 2,556 with octagon barrels and 1,219 with round barrels. Fixed steel blade front sight with adjustable semi-buckhorn sporting rear sight. The top barrel flat is marked "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A./+PAT. JAN. 7. 73. OCT. 19. 75.APR. 1. 79. DEC.7.80. DEC. 13. 81. JAN 3. 82.+". "+BURGESS'S PATENTS+" is stamped on top of the lever with the serial number on the lower tang just behind the trigger. The Rampant Colt is marked on the left side of the receiver. The rifle was finished blue with a casehardened hammer, lever, forend cap and buttplate. Full length 15 round tubular magazine and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a steel end cap and crescent buttplate with buttstock compartment containing a four piece cleaning rod. The factory letter confirms the rifle configuration, caliber, finish "Wood" stock and that it was shipped as 1 of 10 to Schoverling, Daly & Gales, New York City on February 21, 1884. The rifle comes in a glass top wooden display case, a Bay's First Aid Readi-Pak containing vials of pills, a Packer's Tar Soap tin containing a partial bar of soap, a pocket New Testament bible with "Owen Soper/Dec. 2?, 1874" written on the first page, a purple and black container of Deluxe Playing Cards, an unopened box of antique Winchester 44 Caliber cartridges for Winchester Model 1873, a five point Arizona Rangers badge, a pair of spurs and a leather cartridge pouch.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The rifle retains 25% plus of the original blue finish in protected areas with a smooth brown patina on the balance. The hammer, forend cap, lever and buttplate have a smooth mottled gray patina. The loading gate retains 30% of the original niter blue. The wood is very good. The stock is considerably darker than the forearm, and overall there are some scattered minor dents and dings. The markings are crisp and clear. Mechanically fine. The case is very good. The box of cartridges is sealed in plastic and remains very good, the pouch has an added/replaced belt loop marked "WEBB 407" and a replacement securing strap. Overall it shows some flex cracking and tight stitching. The badge is good with a replacement clasp on the back. The first aid kit shows some rust and paint loss, and the remaining accessories are all good or better.
