Description:

This revolver is pictured on page 59 of "Remington Firearms: The Golden Age of Collecting" by Ball. It is also pictured in "The Karl F. Moldenhauer Collection of Remington Arms" as item number 135. A revolver with matching engraving but slightly lower condition is pictured on pages 99 and 108 of "The Guns of Remington: Historic Firearms Spanning Two Centuries" by Madaus and Goodwin. The revolver was engraved and converted for .38 caliber centerfire ammunition at the factory in the 1870s-1880s. It has the "pinched" style blade front sight, standard three line New Model barrel markings, top strap groove rear sight, nickel plated finish aside from some niter blue small parts and the casehardened hammer, a loading gate and ejector on the right, and smooth grips. The underside of the barrel and the grips are both marked "48028," and the grip frame is marked "45028" on the left side. The later is likely a factory error. Both of the books noted above have the revolver listed by the serial number on the barrel and grips. Though legally the serial number on the frame is the one regarded, the one on the barrel and grips is likely the true number from the factory given it is later. The Karl F. Moldenhauer Collection inventory number "KM224" is on the butt and matches the inventory number in the book.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. 90% plus of the original nickel plating remains. There is some slight flaking on the front of the cylinder and a few of the edges on the frame. Nearly all of the original bright niter blue finish and case colors remain on many of smaller fittings. The grips are fine and have some minor scrapes and dings from handling and storage. The action functions excellently, and the markings and engraving patterns are crisp. This is a very rare example of a factory engraved Remington New Model Navy conversion revolver formerly in one of the best known Remington collections.
