Description:

In 1868, Remington began converting percussion revolvers for use with metallic cartridge skirting by the Rollin White patent issue through a partnership with Benjamin Kittredge who paid Smith & Wesson $1 for each converted revolver. Only 4,575 revolvers were converted ahead of the expiration of White's patent in April 1869. This example is listed by the serial number (137455), conversion number (1509), and inventory number (KM647) as item 127 in "The Karl F. Moldenhauer Collection of Remington Arms" and by serial and conversion number on page 55-56 of "Remington Firearms: The Golden Age of Collecting" by Robert W.D. Ball. It has the White patent marking: "PATENTED APRIL 3d 1855" on the side of both of the included cylinders. The revolver was original manufactured for a government contract and has small single letter inspection marks and a "JWK" cartouche on the left grip. The barrel has the "pinched" style blade front sight, standard New Model markings on top, the conversion number near the muzzle on the bottom followed by a "2" and the original serial number on the bottom at the breech. The left side of the grip frame is marked with "21" (twice), the conversion number, "1," and the full serial number. The right side is marked "1879" on the back strap and "1 G V" on the front strap. Moldenhauer indicated he strongly believed 1879 represents the year the revolver was nickel plated by the factory. His collection inventory number is on the butt. Consignor states this item was previously on display at the Cody Firearms Museum and also associated with the Slim Kohler collection.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. Over 85% plus of the factory nickel plating remains. There is a small amount of flaking, various light scratches and marks, and some fading on the trigger guard which has an aged patina on the exposed brass. The grips are very good and have some dings and scratches. The action functions fine, and the markings are crisp. Very few of these early Remington conversions survive today, especially in this level of condition. This may well be the only very fine example complete with two rimfire cylinders marked with Rollin White's patent.
