Description:

This is a very fine example of a factory cased Remington New Model Police percussion revolver that was manufactured late in the Civil War for the commercial market. The revolver has the desirable and rarely encountered 6 1/2-inch full octagon barrel and is complete with a mahogany American style factory case and accessories. The case contains: (1) 250 count in of Eley percussion caps for Remington pistols with orange label, (2) unmarked, iron, straight leg, double cavity bullet mold, (3) pocket pistol powder flask with fixed charger embossed with the eagle and shield motif and "E. PLURIBUS UNUM" ribbon on one side, (4) L-shaped combination screwdriver/nipple wrench, (5) key, (6) 100 count tin of Eley percussion caps for pocket pistols with green paper label, and (7) packet 6 American Powder Company combustible cartridges for Remington Navy or Belt pistols. The pistol has a high polish blue finish with casehardened hammer. The screws, trigger, and cylinder pin are fire blue. The two-piece rosewood grips have a high polish varnish finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "PATENTED SEPT.14 1858/ E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION NEWYORK.U.S.A./NEW-MODEL" in three lines. The serial number "3094" is stamped on the underside of the barrel and on the left side of the frame underneath the grip. All of the visible serial numbers match. This revolver, case and accessories are pictured on page 73 of "THE GUNS OF REMINGTON" by Howard Madis. This revolver was formerly part of the Moldenhauser and Kim collections. Consignor states this item was previously on display at the Cody Firearms Museum and also associated with the Slim Kohler collection.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver is all original and retains 80% plus of the bright original high polish blue finish. There is flaking of the blue visible on the sides of the frame, loading lever, and the back strap. The hammer has 95% of the casehardened finish. Most of the fire blue finish remains on the trigger and screw heads. The grips are in excellent condition and retain nearly all of the high polish varnish finish. The barrel legend is sharp. The action functions intermittently due to weak spring, needs work. The case exterior is in good condition with two hairline cracks in the lid. The case interior is in very good overall condition with some fading and compression marks. The flask, cap tins and, cartridge packet are all in very good-excellent condition. The bullet mold and screw-driver are in fine condition. This is a scarce and very fine factory cased Remington New Model Police percussion revolver with desirable 6 1/2-inch barrel.
