Description:

This is a very fine example of a scarce factory engraved Wesson and Leavitt patent percussion Dragoon revolver that was manufactured by the Massachusetts. Arms Co, of Chicopee Falls, Mass. These Dragoons were manufactured circa 1850-51, with a total production of only about 770. Production was halted due to a patent infringement suit won by Colt. This example has a 7 1/8 inch barrel with a blade front sight and a notch rear sight on the top strap. The top strap is marked "MASS. ARMS. CO./CHICOPEE FALLS" on the top strap, "WESSON'S&LEAVITT'S PATENT" on the right side of the action, "LEAVITTS' PATENT APRIL 29.1837" on the rear face of the cylinder and "WESSONS' PATENT AUG. 28. 1849" on the bevel gear. Factory scroll engraving on the hammer and action, and martial and scroll etching on the cylinder. The barrel, cylinder, barrel latch and back strap are finished blue, the remaining metal surfaces are casehardened and the trigger guard is brass. Fitted with a smooth two piece varnished walnut grip.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine. The barrel retains 75% original blue finish concentrated on the breech end and top strap. The cylinder and back strap retain 80% of the original blue finish with some minor spotting on the back strap and mild pitting around the rear of the cylinder. The receiver retains 80% original bright case colors with graying on the edges. The hammer retains 60% original case colors with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The front strap has a gray patina with overall minor spotting. The trigger guard retains 95% original gold plating. The markings and engraving are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
