Description:

Warner Belt Model percussion revolver manufactured by the Springfield Arms Co., of Springfield, Massachusetts, circa 1851. This single action percussion revolver has a 6 inch, .31 caliber, round barrel, six-shot cylinder, center mounted hammer and two-piece walnut grips. The barrel and cylinder are blued, the frame and trigger guard are silver-plated and the hammer and trigger are color casehardened. The grips have a high polish piano finish. The top strap is roll-stamped: "SPRINGFIELD ARMS CO." and "WARNER'S PATENT/JAN. 1851" is roll-stamped in an arch on the right side of frame. The serial number, "59" is stamped on the inside of the right side of the frame and on the inside of the left grip. The hammer, frame and trigger guard are factory engraved with open scrollwork and line, scallop and punch-dot borders. The cylinder is acid etched with floral and vine decorations high lighted with dry needle engraving. Springfield Arms Co., manufactured an estimated 100 Warner Patent Belt Model revolvers in 1851 before the firm ceased production under pressure from Colt Firearms for patent infringement. Surviving examples of this limited production percussion revolver are scarce.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retains more than 80% of the blue finish overall. The barrel and top strap have most of the blue finish intact with scattered patches of age discoloration. The markings on the top strap are crisp. The cylinder retains nearly all of the etched decorations and most of the blue finish. The percussion nipples and cylinder face show little or no flash pitting. The frame and trigger guard are void of finish and have a pleasing silver gray patina overall. The well-executed engraving and patent markings are sharp. The left corner of the top-strap is broken around the rear top-strap screw. The grips have light scratches and handling marks (primarily concentrated on the butt) but remain in very fine overall condition with most of the original piano finish. This is a scarce example of one of the earliest competitors to Colt's percussion revolvers.
