Description:

This exact rifle is pictured on page 156 of "Gunsmiths of Virginia" by Whisker and listed as having been built by William Will in the 1830s in Shenandoah County. The rifle on the following page is signed by Will and has many substantively similar attributes including the distinctive acorn inlay on the comb and matching silver cheekpiece inlays and engraved side plates. The lock has some simple engraving designs and is marked "SAMUEL MOORE/WARRANTED." Like Will, little is known about Moore other than that he too was active in the early 19th century. The rifle has a dot pattern on the muzzle, standard blade and notch sights, a wedge fastened barrel, silver double acorn rear wedge escutcheons, double set triggers, a silver thumb plate with light designs, an attractive engraved patch box with six piercings, small oval inlay with light engraving on the left side of the butt, an engraved toe plate, and a nicely figured full stock.

Rating Definition:

Good as reconverted to Flintlock configuration. The barrel and lock have an artificial brown finish blended with brown patina that was likely redone in the period of use and has some light oxidation and light pitting. The brass and silver have attractive aged patinas. The stock is also good with some minor repairs and chipping at the breech on the right, a small crack at the lock screw on the left, and some dings and scratches. The lock and set triggers are complete but need some minor adjustments to run properly. The engraving designs throughout and the lock markings are crisp.
