Description:

Produced around the late 1830s-early 1840s, the Sheffield Works bowies were produced by James English and Henry Huber, Jr. (credited as the first American smith to produce a proper clip-point Bowie, and reported by some sources as a supplier of edged weapons to no less than Jim Bowie himself) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While most certainly named to take advantage of Sheffield, England's reputation as one of the blade heartlands of Europe and prime source of quality fighting knives on the American market, the Sheffield Works wasn’t simply banging out product and banking on P.R.; surviving English & Huber bowies are clearly a match for their trans-Atlantic competition in fit and finish. Measuring 14 1/2 inches overall, with a 9 5/8 inch blade fitted with a 3 1/4 inch sharpened back clip, marked "SHEFFIELD WORKS/2" on the right ricasso and "J.ENGLISH/& HUBERS" on the left. A pair of ball quillions are mounted on the oval guard, with a one piece "coffin" grip with a blank inscription panel on the left side, silver bead accents, and German silver ferrule and pommel cap. Included with the knife is a copy of "The Antique Bowie Knife Book" by Adams, Voyles and Moss.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The blade has been very heavily sharpened; the edge rests a full eighth of an inch behind the ricasso, indicating that this knife saw very active and rigorous use during its lifetime. A dark, nearly black patina is showing on the unsharpened portions of the blade and on the guard, with scattered mild pitting. Heavy age cracking is visible on the finely colored grip, with an inscription panel absent from the right side and six (out of eight) accent beads absent from the left. Some play has developed in the guard, ferrule and pommel cap, though the blade remains quite solidly fixed on the grip. Scarce in any condition, this bowie knife clearly performed admirable service and saw hard travels, possibly at war or on the frontier, and would make an addition to any collection of American edged weapons.
