Description:

Special order Winchester Model 1886 Extra Light Weight Takedown Rifle manufactured in 1904. This rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter that describes it as: "Rifle, 45/70, 22-inch, round barrel, extra light, Plain trigger, Checkered stock with pistol grip and oil finish, shotgun butt, rubber buttplate, 1/2 magazine" and "Take-down". The letters states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on February 19, 1904 and returned and repaired on August 16, 1904. The rifle has a round, tapered, "extra light" barrel with a Lyman "Winchester Express" front sight with colored insert and sporting style, buckhorn rear sight. A Lyman folding combination rear sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver, trigger and bolt are blued and the hammer and lever are color case-hardened. The forearm and stock are 1X or 2X fancy grain walnut with a high polish piano finish. The forearm and pistol grip are checkered. The pistol grip has a black hard rubber cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.", and the stock has a black checkered hard rubber shotgun buttplate embossed with "Winchester Repeating Arms Co.". The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "NICKEL STEEL" is roll-stamped on the left side of the barrel immediately below the rear sight and "45-70" is stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the take-down collar. The 1884/1885 patent dates are stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger and the serial number, "129542" is stamped on the lower tang behind the rear tang screw.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The rifle retains 95% of the original blue finish. The barrel, magazine and forearm cap have 98% of the blue finish with some minor finish wear on the muzzle and a few light take-down marks on the underside of the barrel ahead of the magazine. The blue finish on the take-down collar is original and 80% intact. The receiver retains most of the blue finish with light edge wear on contact points and light handling wear on the lower tang. The fire blue finish on the loading gate has faded to a silver-gray patina. The hammer and lever retain more than 90% of the case hardened finish with some fading on contact points. The stock and forearm are in very fine-excellent condition. The deluxe fancy grain walnut has a dark age patina and the high polish piano finish has dulled slightly on the handling points on the forearm and pistol grip. The checkered panels on the forearm and pistol grip have some light handling wear. This is an excellent example of a rare special order Winchester Model 1886 Extra Light Weight Takedown Rifle.
