Description:

This is an exquisite example of a factory cased and engraved S&W No. 2 Old Army Revolver. The revolver has a six-shot, non-fluted cylinder, ribbed barrel and square butt with two piece rosewood grips. The barrel and frame are blued and the hammer, trigger and cylinder pin are casehardened. The rib has a half-round German silver front sight blade. A rear sight notch is cut into the cylinder leaf stop. The barrel rib is roll-stamped: "SMITH. & WESSON. SPRINGFIELD. MASS." "PATENTED APRIL 3, 1855 & DEC. 18 1860." is rolled along the center of the cylinder. The serial number "5071" is located in an engraved panel on the butt. An assembly mark "M4" is stamped on the inside of the barrel lug and on the front face of the cylinder. The revolver is engraved with elegant Germanic vine scrollwork on a punch-dot background engraved on the top and sides of the barrel lug and frame. There is an inscription panel on the back strap and scroll and punch-dot engraving on the butt. The sides of the barrel are engraved with a graceful twist motif with punch-dot centers. The cylinder is engraved with a combination of Germanic scrollwork on a punch-dot background and cross-hatching with dots. The engraving covers approximately 80% of the revolver. The revolver is complete with a mahogany American style case with red velvet lining and four compartments. The case contains a hickory cleaning rod with brass tip and a full carton of No. 32 metallic cartridges manufactured by Winchester.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver retains 97% of the bright original blue finish. There is light flash pitting on the face and forward edge of the cylinder and on the edge of the bore on the inside of the barrel lug. The balance of the revolver finish shows only very minor handling wear. The hammer and trigger have 90% vivid original case colors. The case-hardened finish on the cylinder pin has faded to a silver patina. The engraving is crisp and deep. The barrel and cylinder markings are sharp. The two-piece rosewood grips are in excellent condition and retain nearly all of the original piano finish with very minor handling wear. The case exterior is in fine condition with only minor handling marks. The case interior is very fine and totally original. Wear is limited to some fabric fading, light compression marks from the revolver cylinder and one small tear in the fabric from the revolver hammer. This is a rare and desirable example of a factory engraved and cased Smith & Wesson No.2 Old Army Revolver in outstanding condition.
