Description:

This revolver is one of 3,035 manufactured in 1875. 3,000 were purchased by the U.S. Government. Its low, three digit serial number indicates it was manufactured in the early months of production. It has a modified penny for a blade front sight, standard notch in the barrel catch for a rear sight, and smooth grips with a faint cartouche on the left. The left side of the barrel lug has the two line S&W address and patent marking (65, 69, and 71 only as would be correct for an early Schofield) flanked by Maltese crosses, and the right side has the one line Schofield patent marking flanked by smaller Maltese crosses. The matching serial number is marked on the butt (along with "U.S.") and the rear of the cylinder. The right grip panel is stamped "546," and the underside of the left grip has some hand markings that appear to indicate the revolver was once owned or carried by a doctor and a second individual. Both names are not entirely clear but "Dr" is clear before one name.

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrel has primarily a gray patina on the left and has a gray patina with patches of mild pitting on the right. There is noticeable original blue finish retained in the barrel rib grooves and on the lug near the breech. The cylinder has gray and brown patina and some mild pitting. The frame retains traces of the original blue finish and has gray and brown patina on the balance. The grips are good replacements and have small dings and marks primarily to the edges. The front sight is a period replacement which was fabricated from an Indian Head Penny. The action functions fine, and the markings, with the exception of the cartouche, are crisp.
