Barrel: 22 inch round
Finish: blue/casehardened

Description:

The firearms and accessories in this lot were owned by collector, former Mount Dora mayor, and Spanish-American War and Philippine Insurrection veteran Walter Deaves Patton. He served in the 11th Cavalry in the Philippines. The included document file states that he was involved in 40 to 45 battles between November 9th, 1899, and his discharge on March 13, 1901. Some details of these battles are covered by an antique "Memorandum" journal written by Patton and notes written down by his son. Clippings from a newspaper discussing his bid for re-election at the age of 80 notes that the carbine he used while in the Philippines was part of his gun collection. The document file also includes several photographs of Patton in which he is armed with a Colt Single Action and Krag carbine, a commercial holster with cartridge loops, and an earlier style Mill's pattern cartridge belt without "U.S." buckle. A pair of brown leather riding boots, a canvas cartridge belt with brass "U.S." buckle and loops for rifle ammunition, and two holsters are included. The holsters are of different designs: one is an 1881 type 5 pattern flap holster with "U.S." embossed on the flap, and the other is Mexican single loop style civilian holster. The carbine has a brass muzzle cover, blade front sight, folding ladder rear sight, saddle ring and bar on the left flat (the Model 1898 was the last U.S. arm to have this), "MODEL 1898." and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD ARMORY. 122619" on the side of the receiver, proper Model 1898 stock and handguard, and flat buttplate with trapdoor compartment (empty). A cartouche is not visible on the stock, but traces of the circled script "P" are visible behind the lower tang.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel is an even plum brown and the other components have brown and gray patina. There is some minor oxidation. The brass muzzle cover has a deep aged patina. The re-oiled wood is also fine and has a very dark tone, hairline cracks at the forend tip and top of the handguard, a large chip on the left side above the front of the saddle ring bar, and some minor marks and scratches. The action functions excellently, and the markings are clear. The belt and U.S. holster are very good and have moderate wear from storage and military use. The second holster is poor and has tears and a large pieced section on the back. The boots are in very good condition and have some very minor tears, mild hardening and crackling from age, and only slight tread wear.

B) U.S. Artillery Model Colt Single Action Army Revolver

Manufacturer: Colt
Model: Single Action Army
Type: Revolver
Gauge: 45 Long Colt
Barrel: 5 1/2 inch round
Finish: blue
Grip: walnut
Stock:
Item Views: 1673
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 50
Class: Antique
Description:

This revolver has the mixed numbers typical of Artillery conversions. The frame was originally manufactured in 1874, the second year of production. The revolver was likely used during the Indian Wars and then converted, refurbished, and re-issued for use during the Spanish-American War and Philippine Insurrection. The barrel has the italic address on top and a small "A" and "P" on the bottom near the breech. It has standard blade front and frame groove rear sights, a "bulls-eye" ejector rod head, the 1871 and 1872 patent dates in two lines followed by "U.S." on the left side of the frame, and a one piece grip.

Rating Definition:

Good as arsenal refurbished. The barrel, cylinder, and grip frame have dark brown patina and some mild pitting. The ejector head is a cast replacement and has rich blue finish. The frame has cold blue finish, dark patina, and minor pitting. The grip is fair and has a round repair on the left, some surface cracking, scrapes, and chips at the heel and toe. The action functions fine, and the markings are clear.

C) U.S. Artillery Model Colt Single Action Army Revolver

Manufacturer: Colt
Model: Single Action Army
Type: Revolver
Gauge: 45 Long Colt
Barrel: 5 1/2 inch round
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grip: walnut
Stock:
Item Views: 1673
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 50
Class: Antique
Description:

This revolver has the standard markings and features including mixed serial numbers typical of the late 19th and early 20th century Artillery Model conversions. The frame serial number (119231) dates to 1887 and some of the other components date to much earlier periods such as the trigger guard (6085). The letters from John Kopec discussing similar serial numbered revolvers are included (11923 and 6086). The numbers discussed may be wrong due to misreading of the information sent to Kopec; nonetheless, he notes this group of firearms and accessories was a "great find."

Rating Definition:

Very good as arsenal/factory refurbished. The revolver has primarily a lightly textured brown patina overall and some areas of gray patina. The grip is fine and has moderate handling and edge wear including some chipping. The action functions fine, and most of the markings are legible.
