Description:

Large powder horns like this were used by gunners in the 18th century for priming cannons on naval vessels. More powder horns would have been used by the British at sea than on land since regular soldiers were issued paper cartridges instead of loose balls and powder. The horn material is more typical of those from later periods as is the raised, paneled throat section. Most 18th century horns have recessed throats that have been carved or turned down and often have raised bands. The horn body has elaborate designs including a ship, the Royal Seal of Great Britain, a city scape, floral motifs, "BRITANNIA," "GEORGIUS III," and "AD: 1778 NEW YORK HMS 'GOOD INTENT'." It has a relatively flush fitting plug with hand made staple and pins, another brass fitting on the lower section of the flask, a modern leather strap, wooden spout peg, and a small brass funnel on a chain. Records indicate the name Good Intent was not particularly lucky. Many vessels with the name suffered misfortunes such as shipwrecks in 1764 and 1767, multiple captures by privateers in the 1790s, a ship scuttled after being captured in 1800, and an H.M.S. Good Intent captured by the French and then re-captured by the British during the Napoleonic Wars.

Rating Definition:

Fine with some modern fittings. The horn has a pleasant aged patina overall and mostly clear engraving patterns. There is a small repaired crack near the top and some superficial age cracks throughout.
