Description:

This horn is built in the traditional style of the horns from the French and Indian War and American Revolution. It has a turned down throat with raised rings, ox horn construction, rounded plug with three pins (likely also friction fitted and glued), lobe with two holes for the strap, and an elaborate New York map and the Royal Seal of Great Britain on the body. Among the details are ships in New York City harbor and the Great Lakes, stands of arms, various settlements and forts, and a defaced panel that may have originally been dated and listed the owner. This could have been defaced by someone who captured or stole the horn. The horn has been fitted with a modern leather strap, and the spout plug is absent. Similar horn designs can be seen in "The Engraved Powder Horn" by Jim Dresslar and David Wesbrook. All show individual variance given they were hand designed and engraved, but there are similar patterns and attributes. The city scape is particularly similar to the New York map powder horn in the collection of the Library of Congress. New York was an important city for the British in both the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. One third of the battles during the Revolution were fought in the state, but the British held New York City despite American victories at Ticonderoga and Crown Point.

Rating Definition:

Fine with an attractive aged patina, crisp engraving, mild wear, small cracks on the spout, and some scrapes on the plug.
